What about translation of copyrighted materials? Like Russian version of the 'Pet shop of horrors'? Fanfiction?

For any translations (manual or automatic) I believe you are usually required to have the permission of the copyright owner before performing the translation under the Bern Convention (international copyright treaty)... (Under US Copyright law an automatic translation retains the copyright that the original had - I learned this a long time ago)
