As much as I like centaurs, I thought giving all your horses the ability to shift to centaur a bit of a cop-out. I'm sure there are lots of jobs that a horse with a Talking Box could manage -- there are humans (like Stephen Hawking) that have to communicate through something similar. If James isn't smart enough to be an intellectual whiz (like Hawking), possible jobs include police horse, teaching people how to ride (and troubled teens and handicapped kids might bond with a horse especially well), and teaching people about the ethical treatment of animals from the point of view of one of those animals. Beyond this quibble I've enjoyed the story.
