<poem> I beheld the chessboard with its pieces laid waste, The White Stallion, the Black Stallion, Neither of which actually fought, but both lay dead, The toppled kings and aristocracy, Religious warrior, proud tower, but in the center of this upended chessboard remains two pawns, One black, One white, Both fencing deadily on the edge Till, at once, they realize their folly, lay down their murderous devices in desperate embrace, And then the board slips from the table. </poem>
