<poem> As thy prickly boughs unfurl, And breech once kingly tomb of pearl, Each finger grasps Apollo’s light, An earthly shaft at dawn’s twilight; Its gilded crown adorned with jewel, Green flame kindled at day’s renewal, Yet not so staunch to drop its mane, And expel at last white-crystal bane, Yet hope’s not lost while past is true, To break thy bonds and burn anew.
Thou art the sapling of evergreen, Whom legends tell, and poet’s sing; Thy bark grow thick, thy crest grow tall, To mimic thy ancestors within their hall; To leave behind the wintry wake, And become amongst the cherished great,
- ‘Till all that once was young and new,
- Grows old and dies within its time,
- And all that remember thou grow few,
- ‘Till all that’s left a single line,
But remember this: thou doth not die, As long as one heir remains alive; Be it birch, or oak, or forest shrub, Or jay perched high on limb above, Or the majestic hornád deer, Or grassy knoll in meadows near, Thou doth not die as long as there, Dwells one single faithful heir. </poem> <comments />
