"Gazing lifelessly through windshield, he watched the farms pass him by, huge fields of corn, nearly ready to be sown, golden acres that spanned for miles in either direction."
I'm pretty sure the sentence should be "... nearly ready to be harvested, ..." or "... nearly ready to be reaped, ..."
To "sow" means to scatter or plant seed, what one does in the spring.
