Once there was three men who were traveling across the country to a large city. It was high noon when they reached a dangerous mountain path that no one would dare take. But the men were adventurers and they felt lucky. Soon they came upon a large pit that blocked the path further. But the men had skills and knowledge. The first man was a tough warrior who cut down a tree with his sword and made a bridge across the fearsome pit. The two other men congratulated the warrior and they continued their journey. But it wasn't long before they reached a dangerous river strong enough to sweep them away. The second man was a clever archer who shot down a small rock that caused many rocks to slide down and dammed the churning river. The two other man praised the archer and hurried up the mountain path. They had almost reached the summit of the mountain when they faced a large block of ice. The warrior and the archer turned to the last man who was a humble mage. He was hesitant and uncertain of himself. But he gave it a shot and melt a path through the ice. The two other men celebrated their successes for they will soon reached the city in a fortnight. The three men walked through the ice tunnel and found something blocking their path.

And it was The Shapeshifter. The Shapeshifter was a powerful being who was offended that these humans had entered his private land. But The Shapeshifter was smart, not wanting to fight with these strong travelers. So he plotted revenge. He pretended to congratulate them for reaching his layer. So he offered to teach them his art and allow them each to have one form for being clever enough to get here.

The warrior was a prideful man and wanted to show he was the best warrior. So he went up to The Shapeshifter and asked for a strong form, a form to show his true strength for a man who manages to reach this place. So The Shapeshifter granted him the form of a bear.

The archer stepped forward. He was generally curious man who wanted rewards for his cleverness and wanted pleasures for his labors. So he went up to The Shapeshifter and asked for a form that would allowed him to escape the best hunters, a form that was far faster and better than a human. So The Shapeshifter gave him the form of a stag.

The Shapeshifter turns to the humble mage and asked what form he wants. The mage was curious, strong, and clever. But he was not prideful. He knew that there was always something to learn, something better than him. He however did not trust The Shapeshifter for his need of knowledge. So he asked for a form that will keep him closed to home, a form that will allowed him to live in the city without being attracted to wild. And The Shapeshifter reluctantly supplied him with the form of a common cat.

Then The Shapeshifter flee, allowing the travelers to travel down to their destination, each appreciating their good fortune and their new powers. Once they reached the city did the three travelers separated, each heading for their own destination.

The warrior returned to his home, bringing home his glory and treasures. He indulged into the pleasures of his life, ignoring his spouse and closest kins. He soon became angry with other people and cared for nothing but his own wants. Then one night the warrior was denied his vice and became violent. He accidentally transforms into his bear shape and mauls his unfortunate victim. Panicking, the bear flees until he was struck down by the city guards.

And so The Shapeshifter got his revenge against the warrior.

The archer meanwhile returned to his home at the edge of the city. He was alone and had no friends to speak to. So boredom took the best of him and he transforms into his deer form. At first he only trotted around the woods near the city. Then he explored deeper in the woods, spending more nights as a deer. He started to go out as a deer during the day, dodging hunters and their hounds. It became joyful being deer having so much fun. But the archer did not know that he was losing his humanity every day. It was becoming harder to stay human. So the archer became a deer and abandon his human life. He lived a long life before he was conquered by the best hunter.

And so The Shapeshifter got his revenge against the archer.

So The Shapeshifter waited for many years for the mage. The mage had uses his transforming powers many times but did not fall into despair. He was curious but cautious. So after exploring the animal world was the mage satisfy. So he gave his form to his son and returned to the mountain to leave human civilization once and all.
