THE TRANSFORMATION CONSULTANT: Part 1

Johnny was sitting in his cluttered office talking to a client (a young woman named Stephanie) about how to get her self back in to society when Andy opened to the door.

“Johnny,” he said “we have a problem, can I talk to you?”

Johnny sighed “sorry, you will have to excuse me for a moment,”

The girl nodded and Johnny stepped out in to the hall.

“what is it,” he said and pointed to the door “I am with a client”

“ the police called,” Andy said “there is a situation they are not sure how to handle it. They said they need you now”

“ah, crap” Johnny said and went back in to the office. “ I am sorry, but I have to go. Is there another time we can do this?”

“any time is ok with me, but I would rather not go out in the day like this…” she gestured to her body which was covered in short orange fur. Her face has a short muzzle with a small pink nose on the tip. Her ears are triangular and have moved close to the top of her head (which, still has it’ original medium length hair. “ can I just stay here until you come back?” she asked.

“uh, I might be awhile,”

“that’s all right.” She said quickly

“ok, uh, I’ll send someone to come and check on you every now and then.” Johnny said as he gather his things. He grabbed his beige fedora as he headed out the door.

As he walked to the buildings garage, Andy explained that there was a raging dispute between to female employees and to day one of them finely snapped, she had taken the other, Sarah Stevenson, who was a previous client of there’s, and tied her to a chair in a conference and locked the both of them in. As they entered the garage, Andy said, “oh yah, she has a knife with her.”

“WHAT!?” Johnny said.

“the police have authorized you to use your emergency lights on your way there.”

“well, good.” Johnny said as he got in to a red ford Mustang.

He started the engine and leaned out the window, “by the way, go an check on the girl in my office every now and then” He revved the engine and pulled out, as he did he flipped a small switch on the dash board and blue and red lights under the grill and on the tail of the car begun to flash.

A few minutes later he got to the office building. And ran to the elevator. When he got to the top he rushed to the room where these events were taking place. There were plenty of police men standing at the door trying to talk the woman in to putting down the knife. But they were having no luck.

“ah, Mr. Dean. Thank god!” said one man and held out his hand to Johnny, who took it and shook. “Chet Wilson, head hostage negotiator for this case”

“has anything worked so far?” Johnny asked.

“well” sighed Chet, “we got her to take the knife away from Miss. Stevenson ‘s throat, but aside from that, no.”

“THIS DOG BITCH PISSED ME OFF FOR THE LAST TIME!!” came a yell from inside the room.

Chet sighed again “that’s the first thing she said in a hour.”

Johnny went to the door, “Miss? Will you come here and talk to me pleas?” Johnny asked.

“I’M NOT TALKING WITH NO POLICE!” The woman said.

“I am not a cop” Johnny said “Pleas miss, I know that you are angry…”

“I AINT TALKING TO NOBODY, UNDERSTAND?”

“damn” Johnny said softly. He turned to the police behind him. “Ok, I am going in, stand back.”

“how?” Chet said the “door’s locked”

“magic” Johnny said and pulled out his folding knife.

“your crazy,” said one of the cops “magic doesn’t exist”

“ you’ll be saying something different in a moment” Johnny said and drew a X in the air over the lock with his knife and commanded it to open mentally. Johnny winced as a small but sharp pain shot through his back. The lock glowed momentarily and then opined with a small click.

“holy carp!” said the cop.

“told you so” Johnny said as he pulled out his gun. “wish me luck.”

He burst through the door while shouting “DROP THE KNIFE!” he immediately amid the gun at the woman. She dropped the knife and ran away yelling at him “DON’T SHOOT”

She was promptly arrested in the hall.

Johnny holstered his gun and went to untie Sarah. After he was done she stood up and begun to claw at her wolfish face. When he looked closer He noticed that the was duct tape raped around it.

“oh my,” Johnny said “ let me get that for you,” he reached up and pulled the tape off.

“thank you so much” she said and then passed out.

A short time later paramedics arrived and took her to the nearest hospital, Johnny headed back to the back to the office. Stephanie was slumped in her char and was purring softly, although he was only gone for a hour an a half, she had fallen asleep. Johnny sighed. He felt sorry for her, once the magic came back to the world, people started to transform, and not know what to do. This poor girls family had thrown her out the moment it happened. She had been wandering the streets at night for two weeks before coming to seek help.

“hey,” Johnny said softly “wake up.”

“whu….huh?” she looked up with tired eyes, “oh…Johnny. Your back.”

“yep,” Johnny said as he sat down behind his desk. Stephanie looked at the clock and her face fell.

“I guess you will be closing soon” she said

“yah….do you have somewhere to stay?” he asked.

“no” she said “I haven’t had anywhere stay for two weeks.”

Johnny looked at the girl across from him and sighed

“you can stay with me for awhile.”

She looked up. “Really?”

Johnny nodded. A smile spread over here face. “oh thank you. THANK YOU.”

She jumped up and hugged him.

“no problem.” Johnny said

She was so tired that the moment she got in to bed she was fast asleep. Johnny walked over to the fridge and chugged a Pepsi. At the sound of the fridge closing, Johnny’s dog, Fergus, came running in to the kitchen looking for food.

“hey boy.” Johnny said as he walked over and petted him. “good day?”

Fergus just stared at him.

Johnny went upstairs, showered and climbed in to bed. Fergus ran in and jumped up on the bed.

“hey, you know your not supposed to do that.”

Fergus stepped forward and licked his face.

“fine, but just this once.” Johnny said and Fergus laid down next to him.

“I can’t believe I said she could stay here.” He said to the dog. “I don’t even know her. She could be a murder for all I know. But she’s so young, she can’t be older than 20 for god’s sake.”

Fergus just yawned.

“and she has nothing, I cant just tell to stay with me and then kick her out. What should I do?”

Fergus had fallen asleep.

“good Idea.” Johnny said as he turned off the lights and drifted off to sleep.

The next morning Johnny was sitting at the kitchen table, drinking a cup of coffee and reading the morning paper when Stephanie walked in.

“Good morning.” She said.

Johnny looked up over the paper. “good morning.” He said, “sleep ok?”

“fine thanks.” She said “you?”

“ok. You want something to eat?”

“no thanks,”

“Coffee?”

“yes pleas.”

She took a seat as Johnny got the coffee. When he sat back down, she thanked him for the coffee and was silent.

Ten minutes later, she put down the coffee and looked up.

“how is it that you are able to help all these people?” she asked.

“what?”

“How can you help these people, you don’t seem lick someone who has been transformed before. “

Johnny put down the paper and sighed. “kid, I was once a were-wolf.”

Stephanie raised her eyebrows. “really?”

Johnny nodded “yep, I got hit with a curse in the Amazon while on a adventure. I was the only one who got out of there.”

“so, um.. are you still a were-wolf?”

“no, When I got back, Andy was able to reverse the curse.”

Stephanie’s eyes seemed to brighten “so is there any chance I could be changed back?”

ah damn it Johnny thought. “um…no, I was cursed. What happened to you was natural, sorry.”

Her face fell. She put her head on the table and begun to sob.

Johnny put his hand on her shoulder. “Hey, don’t cry, it’s not so bad….”

She pushed his hand off and run up stairs.

“ah, damn it.” Johnny said and looked down at Fergus who was sitting under the table waiting for some food to fall down. “why don’t you go try to comfort her?” he said.

Fergus barked once and ran upstairs.

“ good boy” Johnny said.

The phone rang.

“hello?” Johnny said in to the phone.

“Johnny” Andy said “we have a problem at work. You have to come in now…”
