Cameron was just outside of the Thunderblaze Innovations parking lot when he heard the sound of footsteps running towards him. Turning around to see who it was, he spotted Jenna jogging up to meet him
Cameron and Jennifer had been walking home from their jobs at Thunderblaze Innovations for some time when the latter finally spoke up and asked the former what he had meant when he had let slip that there was a purpose to all of the work that he'd been subjected to lately.
"Hey," she hollered, "Wait up!"
"So, what's all this about some big mystery project that happens to be the grindstone against which our dad's pushing your nose?" she inquired.
Slowing his pace to let her catch up, the puzzled youth asked her what was on her mind: "What's up?"
"It's nothing important; just some big order that we're trying to fill," responded Cameron.
The young woman explained what she was doing as she caught her breath. "Are you sure you'll be okay walking home all by yourself? It's going to get pretty dark soon, you know…"
"Nothing important, eh?" she contested, "You're trying to hide something from me! Didn't you say something about some kind of presentation that we're going to hold next week?"
"I'll be fine," Cameron reassured her. "Really, Jenna; my house is just over by the hospital," he told her, pointing in that institution's general direction.
"If I ''told'' you, it wouldn't be such a ''mystery'', now, would it?" he reasoned with her.
"Is it OK if I walk with you part of the way?" she pressed"My apartment's just on the other side of Sycamore Street."
"Okay, then," he relented, and resumed walking. "The more, the merrier, I suppose, right?"
"Oh, come ''on!''" she pleaded, "You can tell me! Please?"
"Right," agreed Jenna, who was hot on his heels. "Now, why don't you tell me more about this big mystery project that you're working on with your father?" she inquired.
"Oh, so ''that's'' why you wanted to tag along, eh? Well, if I ''told'' you, it wouldn't be such a ''mystery'', now, would it?"
"Oh, come on!" she cried. "You can tell me! Please?" she begged.
"Nope! My lips are sealed," quipped Cameron. "You'll have to wait to find out, just like everybody else."
A stoic, female voice sounded on the other end of the line: "It's a good thing you're home, sirI'm afraid I have some terrible news for you."
A panicked, female voice sounded clearly on the other end of the line: "It's a good thing you're home, DadSomething terrible's happened!"
"What?" the old man gasped. "What kind of bad news, Miss Corrales?"
"''What?'' Tell me what's happened, Jenna!"
Taking a deep breath to hold back her tears, his secretary told him what she had just witnessed. "It's your son, sir. I was escorting him home, per your request from earlier today, when a crazed redneck in stealth armor popped out of nowhere and shot him right in the chest."
Taking a deep breath to hold back her tears, his traumatized daughter told him what she had just witnessed. "It's Cameronn, Dad! We were walking home together when a crazed redneck in stealth armor popped out of nowhere and shot him!"
"Oh, no… — he must have been hired by Quithersveldt; that son of a heathen is probably still after me over losing that lawsuit I filed against him last year for swindling me out of most of our company's pension funding. Where are you, Jennifer? Did you make it to the hospital?" he demanded.
"Yes, sir." she replied. They took him to intensive care almost as soon as I dragged him through the door."
"I'll be right over," he vowed. "Meet me out front, but inform me of any changes to his condition."
"Dr. Featherspry?"
"Dr. Featherspry? The doctor will see you about your son now."
"Yes, ma'am?" he replied, anxious to see his son
"Finally!" he exclaimed"Is Cameron all right?"
"If you'd just come on back with me, I'll take you to see the doctor who's in charge of maintaining the care of your sonHe'd like to speak with you about something."
"He's doing fine, sir, but we've had to hook him up to an artificial heart system," she explained"The doctor wanted to discuss some options for further treatment with Cameron, but he insisted that you be there for the conversation."
"Of course," he responded"You can come, too, Jenna," he prompted his morose employee
"But he'll be all right, won't he?" Jenna inquired.
"You mean you're not mad at me for not being able to protect him?" she exclaimed
The nurse smiled, reassuring her, "I'm sure he'll be up and about in no time once we're through with him."
Gordon sighed; "Your still upset about that? Come on! Why would I blame you for something like that? He had a gun, and, besides, he popped up out of nowhere. There was nothing you could do, sweetheart."
Jennifer sighed. "I just wish I could have done more to protect him in the first place. I didn't even ''register'' what was going on until it was almost too late…" she mourned.
"All right, then…," the girl conceded. "I just hope he'll be all right."
"It's all right, sweetheart," Gordon soothed his ruffled progeny, "You said he popped up out of nowhere, so there probably wasn't anything you could have done better for him."
"Me, too, darling," he commiserated. "Me, too…"
"If you'll just follow me, then?" the nurse prompted.
"Ah!" remarked the elder Featherspry, "I'm sorry; I didn't mean to hold us up." At that, he and his daughter fell into step behind her,
"Right this way, then, please," indicated their mutual guide.
