Origins

This story arc was created by WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly after he noticed some interesting connections, described on this page in the section 'Inspiration,' between the FreeRIDErs universe, the 'MORFS' universe, and 'Catgirl', a story by a user named Zombie on Instant Kingdom.

Inspiration

A few different details prompted WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly to begin production of this work. First of all, the main characters of 'Catgirl' flee from a battle in space and escape to what they know as 'Old Earth,' supposedly because a 'New Earth' also exists in this story's setting. Once there, these characters hide themselves and their spacecraft inside an old Japanese space station. WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly noticed how the existence of a Japanese orbital facility in 'Catgirl' mirrors the existence of Tenkei, or 'Heaven's Blessing,' in the 'MORFS' universe. Second of all, the author of 'Catgirl' mentions that its main characters are aware of rumors that artificial intelligences of some sort might exist on the planet below their feet. WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly also noted that this gossip runs parallel to the speculation of Earthers as to the reality of RIDEs' existence in the FreeRIDErs universe. When he put these facts together, he conceived of the possibility that individuals from the FreeRIDErs universe might travel to the 'MORFS' universe some time before the beginning of 'Catgirl'.

Project History

Etymological History

WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly was initially going to title this story arc When Worlds Collide, which was also Displacement's original title since that story was, at first, going to be the first one in this arc. He then decided that work hadn't progressed far enough for this project to have been given even a preliminary title, so he replaced this with the code name 'Project 'Crash Course',' a moniker which comes from the facts that this is WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly's first serious attempt at writing transformation fiction and that this story arc's characters are all going to run into each other at some point. The current overarching title, 'Once More Into the Breach, My Friends…,' reflects both how dim Uprooted's main character's father's hopes that his son will be brought back to life some day are given the technology of his day and how this set of stories opens up a 'breach' in the metaphorical dam separating the two story universes involved.

Content History

WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly began tentative work on the stories in this sub-series on October 12^th, 2014. He started with a story, currently titled Displacement, about how an individual from the 'MORFS' universe lived his life before, while, and after she went through MORFS; how she developed her abilities to access, interpret, and manipulate what is known as 'subspace' in the FreeRIDErs universe once she obtained them; and how she eventually used her powers to jump across to the FreeRIDErs universe. Work on that story had stalled by November 14^th, 2014, and was interrupted by another story project that same day. WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly originally intended for this story, currently called Uprooted and which is about how a person living in the early- to mid-21^th century might come to find himself put into some kind of medical stasis only to be woken up in the mid-26^th century of the FreeRIDErs universe, to be unrelated to this story arc but eventually included it when he realized how interesting it might be to convey to his readers how this person might react when faced when Displacement's protagonist upon her arrival in the FreeRIDErs universe. A measured revision to Uprooted was made on November 19^th, 2014, and was followed up by a slightly more extensive rewrite five days later on November 24^th. Minor maintenance was done on Uprooted between November 29^th and December 19^th as well. On January 10^th of 2015, WhenCatsFoxesandWolvesFly formalized a decision to move details about what happened to Uprooted's main character out of Uprooted into a separate, prequel story by stating his intentions to do so in Uprooted's markup.
