Description:

Merged with Buteo-type species during Genesis, this species resembles an anthropomorphic bird of prey with plumage to match. The primary body is feathered, including tail. Individuals have beaks instead of mouths, and nares, and possess a feathered 'crest' which will frequently move in response to emotion and other things, sometimes referred to as "mood hair" by other species. Despite the species base, the eyes are not disproportionately larger than Terran eyes, though they are mostly immobile. The species has a flexible neck, easily capable of 180 degree rotation, though the actual neck can seem poorly defined due to feathers. The circulatory lung in the main torso cavity can result in a 'basketball player' type chest, with a larger upper torso. Arms are feathered to at least the elbow, and sometimes beyond. Hands are scaled, possessing three fingers and an opposed thumb, with scutes lining the back of the hand. Legs are similar, with one stubby, backwards facing toe on each foot. Aside from size, one of the most reliable ways to determine the age of a buteo is by the feathers, as juvenile plumage is displayed prior to puberty.

Culture:

The species is territorial but not overly so. While trespassing will be met sharply with often little warning, there is no serious threat if all appropriate procedures are followed. The society is highly visual, placing emphasis on such. They are known for thier whimsical arts and displays, and for generally pleasing visual and audial asthetics. Food is often fairly bland or extremely flavored, depending on individual preferences, and there is little middle ground. There is a major emphasis on achievement and success, both personal and familial. Children ("Chicks") are expected to carry on and honor both the maternal and paternal familial lines. Drive to succeed is stiff, and competition can be notoriously brutal, even amongst children. Social manuevering is paramount, but at the same time, outright backstabbing is heavily discouraged due to the fact that it generally provides lower overall benefit than teamwork.

Psychology:

Species psychology focuses on achievement and display of such. Many individuals display at least some level of pride or vanity, with more successful individuals having a higher-than-normal rate of clinical narcissism, borderline or otherwise. Claustrophobia is also more prevalent in this species, and most prefer to reside in larger, more open areas; if that is not an option, they will often use architectural tricks to create the feeling. The species inherently thinks in three dimensions and for this reason tend to be good at rapid geometric calculations and activities that require them, such as flying aircraft. While the species often uses public transport, most buteos recieve clearance to fly atmospheric craft by the age of 20. There is a major desire for freedom and flight in the species; BASE jumping is an extremely common hobby, to the point that many structures have external stairs built explicitly for that purpose. On an individual scale, territoriality is still present. While children are capable of sharing living space, adult individuals tend to require a small space that only they (and sometimes thier closest friends) are to access and control. This space often includes the individual's bed or some personal items; invasion of such a 'territory' can lead to rapid emotional escalation depending on the level of infraction, and the risk of diagnosable psychological conditions skyrockets amongst individuals who need such an area and for some reason cannot have one.

Notes:

The species runs an advanced training academy on the uninhabitable moon Gmelin. Graduates of the AGATE (Accelerated Gmelin Academic Training and Education) program are reknown for both their extreme competence and neurotic tendencies. Nevertheless, they are sought after in militaries sector-wide, as many captains believe the benefit more than compensates for the downside, and the requirement of keeping the central government of Terra Buteo apprised of the performance of such graduates. Some less scrupulous militaries are known to use this reporting to blackmail such individuals, as they often have little or no recourse.
