Hello!

I have just started out writing transformation stories (or writing at all, as a matter of fact), so any feedback would be appreciated.
== My little quirks ==

=== Quotations ===
I use a few sets of quotation marks to denote different types of quotes.

==== Ones you probably already know ====

'single quotes' are for adding emphasis

"double quotes" are for, well, quotes

==== New ones ====

/single slashes\ are for writing or typing

//double slashes\\ are for thoughts

I used to use colons instead of slashes, but that would create indentations where I didn't really want them.

=== Timestamps ===
Usually at the beginning of a story, if a large amount of time has passed, or if the setting changes,I will stick a little timestamp in there, such as
:August 22, 2194, planet Arenar
or, if multiple story universes could possibly be involved, I might add that too.
Note: Arenar spaceport has received a message that some of our spells are in need of an upgrade. If you specialize in that kind of enchantment, we are now accepting applications.

On to the story:

Part 3

August 22, 2194, planet Arenar

The freighter was by far the easiest job I had done on anything weighing more than 10 tons. The totem of strength was definitely working, and working well. After I finished work for the day, my thoughts returned to that animorph totem.

I had always liked birds, but there wasn't a lot of wildlife around here on Arenar, so I had to content myself with flying and repairing star cruisers, our way to fly through the stars like a Nebula Eagle. A totem that would allow me to fly through the air like... No, AS a bird would be awesome, to say the least (not to mention cheaper than the exorbitant prices of gas on Arenar, sheesh).

Heading back to the magic shop, I started looking around at the various species of birds that I could be. There was one of my personal favorites, a barn owl. A silent stalker of the night, they weren't the fastest, but were strong and had vastly superior hearing compared to other birds. And it was only 150 shards!

//Yeah, I think I'll go with this one.\\ I thought as I grabbed it and headed over to the counter to pay. This waiver was even longer than the other ones, giving at least 50 good reasons why this could be unsafe, including dizziness and nausea during flight. I almost skimmed it again and signed it, when I thought of earlier today.

The large leap I had made over Quintix had made me feel like I jogged a lap around the track, and I tired more quickly on jobs requiring heavier lifting. Then again, the energy has to come from somewhere, and a jump like that probably needed a lot. So, against my good judgement, I signed the waiver, though I made a mental note to look up a copy of it later.

"You sure read fast..." the clerk said suspiciously.

"Whatever," I replied casually on the way out, though his reaction worried me slightly. //It's probably nothing...\\

Back home, I decided to try out the totem before I used it as transportation. Apparently, the transformation would dissolve my clothes, reintegrating them when the totem was deactivated. If I was using a holder, it would resize it and my belt to fit me so I would still have access to it when I was in my animal form.

Just to be safe, I had actually read the part of the waiver that said about my mental state during transformation. /You should retain your human intelligence, but the animal's instincts will be prominent. Diamond inc. is not responsible for damages... Yadda yadda yadda.\

//Here goes nothing,\\ I think, and shut the lid on the holder. Unlike the unnoticeable effects of the totem of strength, I felt the effects of this one instantly.

First, the whole world looked like it was getting bigger, then I realized that I was shrinking. When I was about a foot tall, my fingers locked together and started to merge, and my arms repositioned themselves to be more on my back.

Next came the feathers. As the instructions had said, they simply encroached on my clothing until it vanished, rather than growing under it, all the while leaving my belt alone.

After the feathers, I could actually FEEL my skeleton re-arrange itself, like there were worms crawling around under my skin. When my beak pushed out, it wasn't my lips hardening like I thought they would, but rather my teeth fusing and pushing out through my mouth.

Then everything stopped. Looking at the clock, I realized the whole process took about 5 seconds, though it felt more like a minute. I looked up at my bathroom mirror, which now looked like it was on top of a mountain.

//Well, there's a problem I never thought I'd have. I can't use my mirror because I'm a foot tall bird. Well, I have wings now, maybe I should try using them.\\

Waddling over to an open-ish space, I gave them a strong flap... And fell on my beak when I actually went up a few feet... No, a few inches, unexpectedly.

"Squak squak!" I said. I had actually meant to say "good grief", but apparently I couldn't talk anymore in this state. //Oh well, beggars can't be choosers. At least I still THINK in English...\\

Trying again, I remembered to keep flapping after the first one, and made it up to the wet-bar below my mirror. For a second, I wondered how on Arenar I had actually managed to fly, then remembered that my instincts would be prominent, and flying was instinct-based for birds. //Intreresting...\\

Actually looking in the mirror now, my chest was a beautiful pure white, my totem holder still slung on a now owl-sized belt, with the heart-shaped ring around my face a deep tawny. Spinning my head around to look at my back (an interestingly natural motion), my feathers were a light tan color, with grey spots peppering it. Unfortunately, my new flexibility in my neck did not extend to seeing the back of my head, which I assumed to be of a similar pattern to my back.

All in all, I rather liked the effect. Reaching over with my left... Wing? Oh, right. I have to use my talons now. Reaching over with my left talon this time, I popped the lid on the totem holder. The change seemed to rewind, starting with my skeleton, then the feathers, then the size. I ended up sitting on my wet-bar, with a stray downy feather still in my hair (which was fortunately not still attached to me).

//I could actually get used to this,\\ I thought, then smiled to myself.

Magic for the mundane

Part 2

August 22, 2194, planet Arenar

On my way to work, I started to think about means of cheaper transportation. My sad old fossil fuel truck was not nearly as powerful or efficient as the (expensive) crystal fusion engines that were the norm on Arenar. Fossil fuels were also insanely expensive considering that, since this was a terraformed planet and didn't have much life to begin with, almost all of the fossil fuels were imported from a nearby solar system, driving the price up to almost 19 shards per gallon.

Diamond inc. sold animorph totems that were looking pretty appealing. Why not fly to work on your own wings? I decided to consider it later.

After I arrived at work, I was confronted by an unwelcome sight.

"Awareqwx," said my boss, "You haven't really been pulling your weight around out here. I think it might be time to find you a new line of work."

"Ah, heh heh, about that..." I chuckled, "I managed to acquire a totem holder with, what do you know, a totem of strength."

"You don't mean one of those new magic-whatsits Diamond inc. came out with, do you?"

"Yep."

"Ok, then," he said with a slight frown, "I'll give you one more chance. This better be good." and walked off.

//Phew! That was close...\\ I thought as I headed over to the repair bay where I spent most of my time at work.

"Hey, Awareqwx!" shouted one of my least favorite co-workers, Quintix, "Heard you got fired, why you still here?"

//Oh, great,\\ I thought. Making sure my totem was in the holder, I just kept walking.

"Did you hear me? Answer me when I ask you a question, shrimp!" he said, coming over to me.

"Why yes, Quint, I did hear you. As for why I'm still here, the boss gave me another chance. Now, if you don't mind, I have a 120 pound armor plate to install," I say nonchalantly, which makes him a little mad.

Before I go on, here's a little bit about Quintix. He is the strongest person in the spaceport, a fairly adept pyromancer, and makes sure everyone knows it. He's a little bit like a class bully, the kind where the teacher thinks he's a really nice guy. So, as a result, I usually wind up having to ask him for help when there isn't anyone else strong enough (or brave enough to go against him), giving me the nickname 'shrimp'.

"Oh, so now the boss thinks you're all special, and probably lent you his physical enhancement suit to make it 'easier' for you, right?" he growls.

"Nope. No suit here," I reply, walking over to the ship in need of repairs.

"I'd like to see this..."

Walking over to the damaged hull plating, unbolt it, and to Quintix's surprise, easily lift the new piece and bolt it in place. "Well, that was fun. Maybe I'm gonna back off on my deal for you to help me with the engines, hmm?"

Quint was now seething with rage at being so easily outmatched by this... This shrimp! He wanted revenge, and wanted it in his way, which usually meant he was about to beat me to a charred, black-and-blue gooey pulp.

"RRAAGH!!!" he shouts, charging at me with a flaming 'falcon punch' thing.

//Ha, let's see what this thing can really do!\\

Mustering my magically enhanced strength, I leap over him with feet to spare, and hit the ground wih a satisfying crash noise. This made me more tired han I would have liked, and I probably should've read that contract better, but I couldn't think about that now as there was currently a brawny pyromancer after me.

"What in the?" he says, turning around, "Doesn't matter, I have fireballs and you don't! Eat plasma!"

He followed this with a few dangerously looking fireballs that I dodged by leaping far to the side. The fireballs flew out of the repair bay and attracted a security guard.

"What's going on in here?!?" he exclaims.

"Awareqwx was attacking me with-" Quintix begins, but is cut off by the guard.

"With hot plasma? No. There are 3 reasons why that isn't possible. 1, you are on the wrong side of him for fireballs to be flying out the door. 2, Aware isn't a pyromancer, you are. And 3, the recording spell says you got mad when he lifted something he would normally have trouble with, you got mad from his taunts, and attacked."

I'd been quiet since Quint threw the fireballs, and decided to relish this moment. Here I was just trying to get by in a tough world, and suddenly I not only solved my lack-of-strength problem, I may had dealt with my bully problem as well. //Best 4000 shards I ever spent.\\

But wait, that leaves another problem. The guard says that there was a recording spell in place, which clearly couldn't be possible if Quintix was able to get away with all lot the other things he did to me.

"Hey, officer?" I ask.

"Yes, Aware?"

"You said there was a recording spell in place. Is that new?"

The guard looks a little bit confused by this, "No...? It's been in place since before you got here, why?"

"Well either it's faulty or it's been tampered with because Quint here has done some things that-"

"No! He's lying!" Quint interrupts, clearly about to panic, "I never did anything to him, I swear!"

"Then you should have nothing to worry about, because you're clearly worried about something," the guard looks annoyed with him and hits him with some sort of spell. "Now be quiet so my restraining spell doesn't have to do it for you. What were you about to say, Awareqwx?"

"Quint here has been bullying me ever since I've needed to constantly ask his help, but noone ever believed me when I told them. If there was a recording spell, why did it never pick up on that?"

Quint seems to be trying to say something, but all I hear is a very quiet and muffled sound.

"Well, the spell has shown signs of tampering, and usually around the times you two were together, and other times when Quint was alone with his group of friends. Your suggestion provides an interesting theory, as one of his friends is an enchanter, of the kind that can easily modify spells that are unencrypted," the guard says, "A good laptop could possibly help him break the encryption on he recording program and modify it to show what he wanted it to show,"

For now though, I'm going to take this doofus here into human resources. Good luck on the engines, Aware."
And with that, he left.

Shaking my head and smiling, I start repairing the damaged hull again.
Part 1

The owl hermit's house, Planet Earth

Oh, hello there! You must be tired after hiking out here in the wilderness just to see me! I hope my rather predatory looks don't frighten you, some people are quite afraid of me. Have a seat in the living room and I'll tell you the story of how I was morphed into the owlish form I now wear.

August 21, 2194, Planet Arenar

It was a relatively normal day when the leading Arenarian magic company, Diamond inc., released their newest little widget, the totem holder. It would, when worn, grant the user effects based on the totem you put in it.

Previously, they were inventing totems that would have to be activated by a rather long and complex spell to grant an effect, now they could be easily used. It was easily one of the most useful things they had made yet, at only 4000 Shards, the equivalent of $1,699 US dollars. It was called "magic for the mundane", due to it's ability to grant effects to a complete novice.

Now, an item like that will have defects every so often, and they could be devastating, present case included. I will relate events to you as best I can remember.

I was on my way to my job as a mechanic at the spaceport when I saw the ad for the totem holder. Of course, I wasn't exactly the strongest person, I'm still not, and a complete idiot when it came to enchantments or space-altering spells, such as the one needed to activate the totems.

For a few months now, I'd repeatedly tried to activate a totem of strength (no success unfortunately) to allow myself to move the heavier pieces of equipment, so an easy way to activate totems without a spell was a godsend. I couldn't exactly spare 4000 shards in pocket change, and decided to look at it later when I had more time to look at it.

6 hours of lifting meteorite-shredded freighter parts later, I finally got home to have a look at the holder. On the website, I read up on the details, and decided that I needed it regardless of price.

Heading out to the magic store, which sold real magic and not just tricks, I bought one and had to sign a (long) waiver that basically said "if something happens that I don't like, it's my fault and I can't sue, except (insert almost unreadable fine print here), then it's our fault". I know that I should've probably taken more precautions, but I was EXTREMELY impatient to try it.

Back home, I put it on my belt, like the instructions said, and placing the totem into it, I shut the lid which supposedly activated the totem inside. For almost 2 minutes, nothing happened, no sudden surge of energy, no feeling of power, nothing. I instantly got very angry and smashed the wall in frustration.

This made a large dent in the sheetrock-covered aluminum wall, which surprised me. A lot. Taking the totem out of the holder, I went to go lift a 70 pound weight that I had on my weight set, which had so far made no improvement to my strength. It was as hard as usual. Putting the totem back in, I could lift it nearly effortlessly. I jumped for joy, instantly regretting it as I smacked my head on the low ceiling of my basement.

"YES!" I exclaimed as I realized exactly what I had just accomplished. Work was going to be much easier from now on.
== Setting ==
I will update this as soon as I get more ideas.

=== Location ===
This story takes place on a desert planet in the Andromeda galaxy named Arenar during the month of August.

Arenar is remarkably similar to our own planet, except that it is much closer to the star, and was unable to support life until it was terraformed, but it is still not the most pleasant place. It has a 24 hour day, and a 7 day week. Since it was colonized rather than originating with life, the whole planet is technically 1 country divided up into quadrants.

=== Currency ===
The currency of the planet is Shards, the physical money being a lightweight yet brittle material that shatters unusually regularly into cubes of 10 milligrams in weight, about 0.5 centimeters across. 1 gram of the material is equal to 1 Shard. So, 1 cube of Shard material is the equivalent of 0.01 Shards. $1 US dollar is equivalent to about 2.25 Shards

=== Magic ===
The magic of the universe is based off of a specific type. You can be a Pyromancer, a Cryomancer, an Enchanter, a Hydromancer, etc. but not a combination of them. The only time you could have multiple powers is if you were to gain all of them at the same time, but the powers would be very, very weak compared to a single one. A jack of all trades is the master of none.
